DIY (Do It Yourself) projects are all the rage. There are books, websites and television programs that give instructions on renovating, remodeling and updating a home, and it looks so easy. And in some projects it is, but in a lot other ways, it may be a more than a weekend DYI project can handle.
Real renovation is not just new paint and flooring. It’s the difference between applying makeup and getting a face lift. It’s surgery: a permanent structural change that improves the space’s interior and exterior, and extends its life by improving its efficiency.
So what does a professional renovator do? You have a few meetings and conversations and they offer a budget range, based on your interview. You both review details, decide on a fixed cost, put together a scope-of-work and sign the contract, and then “a miracle happens”. But it’s what you don’t see that makes the difference, and makes it look easy. What you don’t see are the many details before, during and at the end of your renovation.
The difference is renovators understand how different materials interact with your specific environment, and how to prevent such problems such as mold, drafts, cold or hot spots, leaks, and insect invasions.
A professional renovator knows a lot more that just decor. They also know about “structure” and “space” – how to fill it and how to change it; and can get the right materials quickly, without daily trips to the Big Box Store for supplies and advice.
And most importantly, A contractor knows the current regulations and legal requirements, including building codes, and environmental issues, health and safety regulations, and has a long time relationship with suppliers and his/her subcontractors. All is clearly stated in the contract, so there will be no surprises or sudden additional expenses.
