remodeling dos and donts, contractor, home market value, home remodeler, improve home, remodel contractor, remodeling jobs, renovation companies, structural changes, tooling, MD contractorHome owners remodel either to improve their standard of living or for better return when selling. Here are a few dos and don’ts regarding remodeling.

Do Hire a Contractor. For a full renovation requiring structural changes, an established, professional renovation company is required. They have the tools, the experience, and the knowledge, and also know the local laws and regulations.

Don’t Do the Job Yourself. The DYI option is fine for small repairs and upgrades, but reading a few How-To books and a trip to Big Box store won’t give you the experience and knowledge you need. Renovating is more than painting walls and adding cabinets. Contractors have the skills and training to complete any remodeling job quickly and efficiently. And professionals are actually more cost efficient. They provide the tools, labor, and materials at a more reasonable price than shopping in a retail outlet.

Do be conscious of your environment. Be realistic about what you want and need to improve, and think of what also gives your home “market value” and what you really need to make you home more livable, modern and efficient.

Don’t add improvements that aren’t practical. Too many homeowners, especially those who are renovating to sell, figure that adding a gazebo, a swimming pool, a  pond or an elaborate landscape project, will attract buyers and add to the price and lifestyle. But In fact, those expensive additions may just price you out of the market.

Do know your Contractor. Make sure your contractor is a licensed and established professional. Check their website for testimonials from satisfied clients and ask for references. In Maryland, Houseworks Unlimited has an established reputation and a record for quality, safety and professionalism in home renovations.
